“Games in motion, the world in revolution” : Tokyo Game Show returns in full energy with ‘largest-ever’ convention

The Tokyo Game Show, launched in 1996, is one of the world’s three biggest gaming events, along with E3 in the United States and Gamescom in Germany.

TGS(Tokyo Game Show) Unfortunately, the weather was not favorable, but despite inclement weather, many people formed long lines inside and outside the venue, following the lifting of restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual gaming extravaganza is using the entire Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba near Tokyo.

One notable aspect of the TGS 2023 was its return to full use of all exhibition halls after a four-year hiatus.

The excitement in response to this “full-scale revival” was palpable at the venue.

New gaming PCs were among the exhibits that drew the most attention from visitors to the Tokyo Game Show, one of the world’s biggest gaming events which opened on Thursday and closing on Sunday.

In addition to the many new game titles for various platforms and other products on display, gaming PCs have seen a resurgence in interest.

The Tokyo Game Show 2023, hosted by the Computer Entertainment Association (CESA, Chairman: Haruhiro Tsujimoto), took place in the real world at Makuhari Messe from September 21 (Thursday) to 24 (Sunday), spanning four days.

The first two days are mainly reserved for media and industry representatives, with the doors opening to the general public on Saturday and Sunday.

On the 21st and 22nd, it was the Business Day, with 69,815 attendees. On the 23rd and 24th, it was open to the general public, with 173,423 attendees, resulting in a total of 243,238 visitors.

Under the theme “Games in motion, the world in revolution,” Tokyo Game Show 2023 (TGS2023) was held for the first time in four years, utilizing all the halls of Makuhari Messe.

A total of 787 companies and organizations from 44 countries and regions, the highest number to date, participated in the exhibition.

The real venue showcased new titles for various platforms, ranging from home game consoles to smart devices, PCs, and VR.

Additionally, a wide range of related products, services, solutions, merchandise, and more reflecting the expansion of the gaming industry were exhibited.

On the main stage of the event hall, various programs were conducted, from keynote speeches and the announcement of the Japan Game Awards 2023 to eSports, fashion, music, and other aspects of enjoying games.

Business negotiations were also active, with a record-high of 2,355 negotiations conducted using the “TGS Business Matching System.”

The show is bringing new games using technologies such as the “metaverse,” a virtual space on the internet, into the spotlight.

The U.S.-based Meta company, owner of Facebook, exhibited its VR headset “Meta Quest 2.”

Quest store content sales surpassed $1 billion (143.33 billion yen), Meta announced in February. The metaverse market using VR is expanding.

One company presented a system in which players can buy and sell rare items in games as NFTs, or non-fungible tokens that are difficult to replicate, and earn money while playing.

From Japan, major game companies such as Konami Group Corp. and Square Enix Co. are attending the show.

Game console giants Nintendo Co. and Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. are exhibiting only for business and online participants.

Taiwan’s ASUS exhibited its new portable gaming PC, the ROG Ally, which lets users play PC video games while on the go like the hugely popular Switch console sold by Nintendo Co.

Intel Corp. displayed the latest gaming PCs carrying its advanced semiconductors, developed in collaboration with various PC makers.

“An increasing number of people started playing video games on PCs during the coronavirus pandemic because many game consoles were not (widely) available due to a chip shortage,” said Shoko Ueno, marketing director at Intel’s Japanese unit. “The market is expanding.”

For the first time, 10 official influencers active in the Asia-Pacific region, each with at least 100,000 followers on social media, have been selected to promote the event in their respective languages.

A special lounge is available for influencers and creators to use as a base for testing games and uploading videos, the organizer said.

Among Japanese companies, Sega Corp. exhibits “Football Manager 2024,” a soccer club management simulation game developed by a European subsidiary.

To the event, 10 overseas influencers from India, Taiwan, Australia and elsewhere are invited. They will distribute information on the event and exhibited games to their audiences.

This year, a virtual reality space, where gamers can participate through a dedicated application, is being offered.

The device has been launched to meet demand from those who want to play games even when they are away from home, a company official said.

Online, 25 official programs were livestreamed. They were broadcast on platforms such as YouTube, X (Twitter), Twitch, as well as on the TGS official accounts, NicoNico, Steam special site, and more.

Additionally, for the Chinese audience, broadcasts were made through DouYu, bilibili, HUYA, and for the Western audience, IGN collaborated for the broadcast.

The VR venue “TOKYO GAME SHOW VR 2023,” now in its third year, saw many game enthusiasts visiting (scheduled to run until October 1) including China’s NetEase Games, the developer of globally popular online game “Knives Out.”

Participants must purchase tickets online in advance.

Admission is free for elementary school students and younger if accompanied by their parents/guardians.

The next “Tokyo Game Show 2024” is scheduled to be held from September 26 (Thursday) to 29 (Sunday), with Makuhari Messe as the planned real venue.
